Customs Intelligence officials on Monday detained a man with nine gold bars weighing 1.44 kg from the Benapole immigration check post.
The detainee was identified as Siddiqur Rahman, 46, of Barguna district.
Tipped off that a passenger was carrying gold bars to smuggle those to India, Customs intelligence personnel detained Siddiqur from the immigration area and seized the gold bars worth Tk 80 lakh, said Benapole Customs Detective Assistant Director Moniruzzaman Chowdhury.
The detainee was later handed over to Benapole Port police station, Moniruzzaman added. A case has been filed in this regard.
