Customs officials arrested a man along with 7 gold bars as well as gold jewellery weighing around 1.216 kg and worth almost Tk 89 lakh from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Monday.
The detained Md Shah Alam, who hailed from Feni, Chittagong, was a passenger on an Air Arabia Airlines flight that arrived from Sharjah.
Acting on a tip-off, members of Customs Intelligence took positions in several locations across the airport. While going through the green channel, the passenger's bag was scanned and the existence of gold bars was found. Later his bags were searched and gold bars and jewellery worth nearly Tk 89 lakh were found.
Legal action will be taken against the person, customs officials informed.
