Man injured in Ctg shipyard blast dies

A 38-year-old man who suffered injuries in an explosion and subsequent fire at the SN Corporation shipbreaking yard in Sitakunda, Chattogram, died early Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Ahmad Ullah (38), manager of SN Corporation shipbreaking yard.

Twelve people suffered burn injuries in the explosion on Saturday.

Nazrul Islam, who brought the injured victims to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, said that the explosion occurred while the workers were cutting a ship at the yard on Saturday morning.

The injured were initially taken to CMCH and later eight of them were referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment. Ahmad Ullah died on the way to Dhaka.

The remaining seven were admitted to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, where Dr Tariqul Islam declared their condition as critical.

Among the injured, Mohammad Jahangir Alam and Abul Kashem each suffered 70 per cent burns, Barkatullah sustained 60 per cent burns, Anwar Hossain 25 per cent, Khairul Islam 80 per cent, Al-Amin 80 per cent, and Habib 45 per cent, he said.

The Ministry of Industries formed a committee to investigate the incident.

Additionally, operations at the shipbreaking yard have been suspended until further notice.
