A man in Bagerhat surrendered to police on Saturday confessing to the murder of his wife while fighting over her alleged addiction to TikTok.
The deceased was identified as Soma Akter, 20.
The incident took place in the Dashani area of Bagerhat district town on Saturday.
Confirming the matter to The Business Post, KM Azizul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bagerhat Sadar police station, said the husband Abdullah Al Naim initially confessed to killing his wife.
“Naim said he committed the murder because Soma was addicted to the TikTok app. It is being investigated whether there was any other motive,” the OC said.
Police and family members of the deceased said that Naim and Soma got into an argument over making a video on TikTok around 8:00pm on Saturday. At one point, Naim became furious and began to beat up his wife. He then strangulated her with a piece of cloth.
Naim later came to the police station and surrendered, OC Azizul said, adding that police recovered Soma's body from his house as per his confession.
Soma’s family said she and Naim got married in 2019. They were both unemployed at that time. After the marriage, they started to make videos on apps like TikTok and Likee and post them on their Facebook accounts. They even began to earn money from their videos.
When Naim got a job and went to Dhaka, Soma remained at her father's house to continue her studies. She also continued posting videos regularly on those apps. Soma was doing well with the income from there, according to her family members.
