Man suspected of killing wife, children in Sylhet

A 40-year-old man is being suspected of the murder of his wife and two children in Goainghat upazila of Sylhet on Wednesday.

The husband, Hifzur Rahman, also injured in the attack on Wednesday morning, is now on the police’s suspect list for the murder case of Alima Begum, 34, and the two kids — Mizan, 9, and Anisa, 4, according to the police investigation.

He is currently undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Police said they were investigating the matter from two different angles. So far, they have found nothing related to any previous antagonism.

They are now suspecting the attack might have resulted from family dispute as investigation from this angle reveals some unusual leads. For instance, a weapon used in the murder has been recovered from Hifzur's house. At the same time, Hifzur's behaviour at the hospital seemed suspicious to police.

Police believe that Hifzur may have killed his wife and two children due to a fight with his wife.

Activities of several people in the area are being monitored by the police.

However, no case was filed over the incident till 11am Thursday, said Additional Police Super of Sylhet Lutfor Rahman.

On Wednesday morning, the couple and their two minor children were found with their throats slit at their home in Binnakandi village of Sylhet's Goainghat upazila.

While Alima and her two children Mizan, 9, and Anisa, 4 succumbed to their injuries on the same day, her husband Hifzur survived and is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

Abdul Ahad, officer-in-charge of the Goainghat police station, said that neighbours found the family members lying in a pool of blood after they broke open the door hearing Hifzur groaning with pain.

Later, cops were informed and a team from the local police station rushed to the spot and took the bodies into custody. A seriously injured Hifzur has been admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College and Hospital.
