A court in Barishal has sentenced a man to death and another to life in jail for killing a rickshaw puller in 2015.
Public Safety Disturbance Crime Prevention Tribunal judge TM Musa handed down the judgment on Monday, after holding Shoyeb Hawladar Sabuj and Ali Azim, both 29, guilty of the crime.
The court also imposed a fine of Tk 20,000 on Shoyeb, who was sentenced to death. He is the son of Adam Ali Hawladar, a resident of Banaripara upazila and a former member of Border Guard Bangladesh.
According to the prosecution, the rickshaw puller -- Jamal Khan, 28, son of Abul Kalam of Madarkathi village in the upazila -- was found dead on June 17, 2015.
Days before, Shoyeb and Jamal had an altercation over the former's alleged illicit relationship with a woman. Subsequently, Shoyeb and Azim killed Jamal and dumped his body in a canal.
On March 12, 2016, police submitted a chargesheet against eight people, including Shoyeb. However, six other accused in the case were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
