The maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to stay alert as a depression over the southwest Bay and adjoining areas intensified into a deep depression.

The weather system that moved north-northwestwards, was centred about 1,615km south-southwest of Chattogram port, 1,565km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 1,495km south-southwest of Mongla port, and 1,495km south-southwest of Payra port at 6:00am on Saturday, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said in a bulletin.

It is likely to intensify further and move in a northwesterly direction, it said.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 48km of the deep depression centre is about 50kph rising to 60kph in gusts. Sea will remain moderate near the deep depression centre, the Met office said.

All fishing boats and trawlers over the north Bay and deep sea have been advised to proceed with caution.
