Students of different educational institutions in Dhaka on Friday held a mass gathering at Shahbagh intersection under the banner of ‘Dhorshon O Bicharhinotar Biruddhe Bangladesh’ demanding justice against rape.
The protesters announced they will march from Dhaka to Noakhali on October 16 and hold a mass rally there on October 17.
Nasir Uddin Prince, general secretary of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front pressed forward a 9-point demand on behalf of the protesters.
Anik Roy, general secretary of Bangladesh Students' Union announced that the protestors will be sitting at Shahbagh intersection continuously till October 15 from 4 PM protesting the growing incidents of rape across the country.
He also criticised earlier comments of the home minister where he said rape is happening all over the world.
Anik Roy told The Business Post, “The home minister’s statement will contribute to normalising rape culture in the country and intensify rape incidents.”
He demanded immediate resignation of the home minister for his comments and the lack of justice in the country.
The protesters included general people, leaders and activists from different political organisations.
The recent gang rape incident at Sylhet MC College and housewife molestation in Begumganj of Noakhali fueled the protests.
