The government launched a nationwide campaign on Tuesday morning to inoculate around 75 lakh people, marking the 75th birthday of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

With administering Sinopharm vaccine doses, the countrywide inoculation began around 9:00am.

Health service officials said the vaccine will be inoculated from 6,000 centres including 4,600 union parishads, 1,054 municipalities and also at the ward-level under all the city corporations.

Pregnant and lactating women remain out of the campaign.

People were seen standing in queues at different vaccination centres in Dhaka and elsewhere for receiving their first jabs since morning.

Addressing a press conference, Health Minister Zahid Maleque on Sunday said that the people, who got registered for the vaccines, would get priority during the nationwide campaign.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) chief Abul Bashar Mohammad Khurshid Alam said the day-long vaccination campaign may be extended, if the vaccination drive is hampered in any remote or hard-to-reach areas due to rough weather.

Vaccine recipients, who would be inoculated during the campaign on Tuesday, would receive their second jabs on October 28, he said.

So far, Bangladesh has received over 5.52 crore vaccine doses from different sources and administered over four crore doses among the people since the government started mass vaccination on February 7.

Earlier, 45 lakh people were vaccinated during a country-wide week-long mass vaccination campaign started on August 7.

Bangladesh set a target to vaccinate the country's 80 per cent population by 2022 under an accelerated inoculation campaign.

Covid vaccines of four companies — AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, Pfizer, and Moderna — are being inoculated in the country.
