Legal action will be taken against owners of property found involved in dumping wastes through underwater sewerage lines from September 1, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam said Tuesday.

“Already a list of the buildings which were involved in dumping waste through direct lines into surface drains or prepared to do so. A drive will be conducted from September 1 in Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara and Niketon. Legal steps will be taken if any direct sewerage line is found in those areas,” he said.

Atiqul was speaking at a views-exchange meeting with the leaders of societies representing each of the residential areas concerned over sewerage management in north Dhaka, at Nagar Bhaban.

“We are cleaning lakes, canals and drains regularly but the wastes from the sewage line pollute water. As a result, these have become the breeding centre of mosquitoes. It will not be allowed anymore,” he warned.

Atiqul also urged the leaders to work with responsibility to make the city clean.
