Another named accused in a case filed over Friday's gang-rape of a woman at Murari Chand (MC) College in Sylhet has been arrested by police.
Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, 25, a fourth-year student of the college and the number six accused in the case, was arrested from a relative's house in the Haripur area of Jaintiapur upazila in the district around 11:30pm on Monday.
Kanaighat police personnel and Sylhet district police’s detective branch members jointly raided Haripur area of Jointapur upazila here last night on secret information and arrested Mahfuz from Pakhilbil village, said Shamsudduha, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kanaighat police station.
Meanwhile, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Ainul, 25, conducting a drive in Kachua area of Fenchuganj upazila of Sylhet around 01:00am on Sunday, said Rab-9 official.
So far, a total of seven have been arrested in the case, including five named accused.
Among the arrestees, Saifur Rahman, Arjun Lashkar and Robiul Islam were placed on a 5-day remand each on Monday.
A group of youths tied up a man and raped his 19-year-old wife at the MC College dormitory on Friday night.
After police rescued the couple, the victim’s husband filed a case at Shahporan Police Station in the early hours of Saturday against nine people mentioning the names of six, accusing Saifur Rahman, 28, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Roni, 25, Arjun Lasker, 25, Mahfuzur Rahman, 25, Tarek Ahmed, 28, Robiul Islam, 25, and two/three other unnamed men.
