MC College Gang-rape: Studentship of 4 suspects cancelled

National University authorities have temporarily cancelled the studentship of four accused in Sylhet's Murari Chand (MC) college gang-rape case.

The decision was made on Monday at a meeting of the 210th syndicate of National University, confirmed MC College sources.

The four students are -- key suspect Saifur Rahman (irregular student of BSS Degree (pass) course, session 2012-13), Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony (regular student of master's in English, session 2016-17), Rabiul Islam (regular student of BSS Degree (pass) course, session 2013-14) and Mahfuzur Rahman Masum (regular student of master's in English, session 2017-18).

Syndicate members at the meeting condemned the heinous crime and expressed grave concern over it. They urged the authorities of all the affiliated colleges to take necessary measures to prevent recurrence of such acts at their respective institutions.

A group of youths tied up a man and raped his 19-year-old wife at the MC College dormitory on the night of September 25.

After police rescued the couple, the victim’s husband filed a case with Shahporan Police Station in the early hours of Saturday last against nine people mentioning the names of six.

Eight of the accused in the case are currently in police custody and a total of six among them delivered confession statements so far.
