Mild heatwave sweeping over country

A mild heatwave is sweeping over the parts of north, south, north-eastern and central regions of the country, including the capital Dhaka.

"Mild heatwave is sweeping over Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions and the districts of Dhaka, Khulna, Kushtia, Faridpur, Tangail, Kishoreganj, Manikganj, Bogura, Sitakunda, Narayanganj and Nilphamari and it may abate from some places," said a Met office forecast for the next 24 hours commencing from 9am Friday.

Day temperature may remain nearly unchanged over Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions and it may fall slightly elsewhere over the country. Night temperature may fall slightly.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and at many places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over southern part of the country.

A low pressure area has formed over the northeast Bay and adjoining area. The axis of the monsoon trough runs through Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, centre of the low to Assam across the southern part of Bangladesh, the Met office said.

The monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and moderate to strong elsewhere over the north Bay.

The country's maximum temperature – 36.8 degrees Celsius – was recorded at Sayedpur on Thursday and minimum temperature – 23.5 degrees Celsius – was recorded at Sitakunda.

The maximum rainfall of 19mm was recorded in Rangamati over the past twenty-four hours till 6am Friday.

The sun sets in Dhaka at 5:48pm on Friday and rises at 5:50am on Saturday.
