Minni appeals to HC against lower court verdict in Rifat murder case

Murdered Rifat Sharif’s wife Ayesha Siddiqua Minni, who was sentenced to death, has applied to the High Court challenging the lower court order on Tuesday. 

Minni’s lawyer Advocate Makkiya Fatema Islam file the appeal to the High Court on Tuesday.

Makkiya Fatema Islam confirmed the matter to The Business Post.

Earlier on October 4, the documents of the sensational  Rifat Sharif murder case reached the High Court, as a death reference to examine the trial court verdict that sentenced six to death.

Officials of the Barguna court brought the documents of the case,  including the judgment, to the HC on Sunday.

Jahangir Alam Piku, office assistant, Barguna District and Session's Judge Court confirmed the matter to The Business Post on Sunday.

Earlier on September 30, a Barguna court sentenced six people including Minni to death for murdering Rifat Sharif.
The court also acquitted four others in the sensational murder.

District and Sessions Judge Md Asaduzzaman delivered the verdict around 1:45pm on Wednesday.
The victim's wife Ayesha Siddiqua Minni and other convicts were present in the dock while the verdict was being read out.

Earlier on September 15, the court finished recording testimonies of 14 juvenile accused in the case on Tuesday.

Rifat, 22, son of Dulal Sharif, was hacked to death in broad daylight in the district town on June 26 last year.
He was attacked near the main gate of Barguna Government College. Surveillance camera footage showed his wife Minni apparently trying to save him.

Twenty-four people were accused in the murder case filed by Rifat’s father. Minni, initially named as a witness, was later arrested on July 16 last year and made an accused.

Sabbir Ahmed alias Nayon Bond, the main accused, was killed in an alleged gunfight with police on July 2.

Indictment

A Barguna court on January 1 indicted Minni and nine others for Rifat’s murder. District and Sessions Judge Md Asaduzzaman framed charges.

The other accused are – Rakibul Hasan Rifat Farazi, 23, Al Kaiyum alias Akon, 21, Mohaiminul Islam Sifat, 19, Rezwan Ali Khan Hridoy, 22, Md Hasan, 19, Md Musa, 22, Rafiul Islam Rabbi, 20, Md Sagor, 19, Kamrul Islam Saimun, 21.

The High Court on August 29 last year granted bail to Minni on condition that she would remain in her father’s custody and refrain from talking to the media.

Meanwhile, 14 other underage accused are currently being tried separately in a juvenile court over Rifat’s murder.
