Clashes, chases, and counter-chases between law enforcers and quota protesters turned the capital’s Mirpur-10 intersection into a warzone on Thursday. The clashes began around 11:30am on Thursday.

Around 20-30 students were reportedly injured in the clash.

Sources say the students had gathered at the intersection around 11am. The protesters chased the police towards Mirpur police station. The police later chased the protestors towards Mirpur-10.

The law enforcers later fired tear shells to disperse them. In response, the agitators pelted bricks and stones at the police. At least five motorcycles were set on fire, and tires were burned on different roads. The entire area has turned into a warzone.

Earlier in the day, leaders and activists of various organisations and affiliated bodies of Awami League gathered in Mirpur 10. After being chased by the students, they were forced to flee from there.

On Wednesday, the Boishommo Birodhi Chhatra Andolan announced a “Complete Shutdown” programme as part of the ongoing quota reform movement, protesting the killing of students and indiscriminate attack by the police.

Asif Mahmud, one of the coordinators of the protest, had announced this programme on his Facebook.

According to the announcement, everything - except hospitals and emergency services - have been declared closed on Thursday. Besides, no vehicles will be allowed to ply the road, except ambulances.
