Mitu murder case: HC asks PBI for update of probe by May 6

The High Court (HC) has again directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to submit an update by May 6, 2021, on the progress of probe into the killing of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of sacked assistant superintendent of Chattagrom Metropolitan Police Babul Akhter.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman set the new schedule on Thursday as Investigation Officer Santosh Kumar prayed for more time to complete the investigation in the case.

On the day, the HC also refused to grant bail to detained accused Motaleb Mia Wasim for his connection with the case.

Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Sarwar Hossain Bappi was present before the court in favour of the state.

Earlier on January 31, 2021, the PBI submitted a progress of probe into the case. Santosh Kumar Chakma, PBI's inspector and investigation officer of the case, submitted the report to the HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman.

On December 2 last year, the HC asked the PBI to submit a report on the progress of the investigation into the gruesome murder of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.

On June 5, 2020, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu was stabbed and shot dead when she was walking her son to his school bus stop at the port city's GEC intersection.

Later, Babul Akhter filed a case against three unidentified men with Panchlaish Police Station.

Motaleb Mia Wasim, Anwar Hossain, Ehteshamul Haque alias Bhola, Md Shahjahan and Saidul Sikder Shakur (Musa's elder brother) have so far been arrested in connection with the murder case.
