Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen on Tuesday said events behind the killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman need to be researched further.

"Diplomats from which countries visited Bangladesh frequently and who said what before the assassination of Bangabandhu should be researched too," he said.

The foreign minister was speaking at a discussion on the occasion of the 48th martyrdom anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized the discussion at the Foreign Service Academy.

The foreign minister said before the assassination of Bangabandhu in 1975, unrest was created in the country and stories like Basanti's were circulated.

At that time, he said, many were mobilized across the country and they instigated chaos and trouble.

"Attempts are being made to create such instability in Bangladesh today. A similarity with that period is being seen," Momen said.

Despite the incredible progress in the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, it seems that some people are still trying to create such a situation, he said.

"So, we have to be careful. We have to work with sincerity. We have to be more active in countering different types of propaganda that have started," the foreign minister said.

He said, "Bangabandhu is an ideal, a spirit, an institution. He gave us an independent sovereign state, created a nation. He did not stop with just creating an independent sovereign state; in just three and a half years, he had done all the necessary work as the Father of the Nation to establish a newly independent country on a strong foundation."

Momen said Bangladesh achieved memberships of all the international organizations within this short time. "Bangladesh was even able to achieve membership of the United Nations."

There are very few countries in the world who have achieved the recognition of so many states in such a short period of time, he noted.

"It was possible because of Bangabandhu's visionary leadership and his personality," he said.

"Bangabandhu not only left an independent country, he left behind a dream in our hearts, and that dream is of Sonar Bangla. A developed, prosperous economy, where food, clothing, shelter, education, healthcare will be guaranteed for all. We are working to realise his dream," said the foreign minister.

Veteran Awami League leader Amir Hossain Amu said after the assassination of Bangabandhu in 1975, many people thought it was family-centric.

"But later it became clear: it was against the independence of Bangladesh," Amu said.

He said that they are not afraid of protests. "However, BNP is relying on foreign forces because it has been defeated on the ground."

Amu said Bangladesh is now moving forward under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina who ensured a position of pride for the country.

Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is the epitome of freedom of the nation. "Under his visionary and strong leadership we achieved our great freedom through nine months of bloody war."

The foreign secretary also said that the Father of the Nation took timely and effective steps to establish and develop Bangladesh's relations with the world to develop a country that was war torn. "Bangabandhu gave a new identity to Bangladesh on the world map as well as the international dimension."
