Police on Friday detained Faridpur town unit Awami League president Nazmul Islam Khandaker Levy in connection with a case filed over laundering Tk 2,000 crore.
Faridpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Alimuzzaman confirmed the matter to the media.
Nazmul was detained by Kotwali thana police from the town’s Charkamala area around 1pm and afterwards, sent to Faridpur district jail upon court direction, said the SP.
He was detained as per the instruction of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police, added SP Alimuzzaman.
CID filed a case with Dhaka’s Kafrul Police Station on June 26, accusing Faridpur town unit Awami League’s former general secretary Sajjad Hossain alias Barkat and his brother, former president of Faridpur Press Club Imtiaz Hasan alias Rubel of laundering Tk 2,000 crore.
Sajjad and Imtiaz gave confessional statement before a Dhaka court on July 30 in the case.
