Moon Sighting Committee meets Saturday

The National Moon Sighting Committee will sit in a meeting Saturday (May 23) evening to determine the date of Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival for Muslims.

The meeting will be held at the Islamic Foundation office in Baitul Mukarram, with State Minister for Religious Affairs Sheikh Md Abdullah in the chair, said a press release Friday (May 22).

Amid some restrictions because of coronavirus pandemic, Eid will be celebrated in the country on Sunday (May 24) if the Shawwal moon is sighted on Saturday (May 23). If the moon is not sighted on Saturday, Eid will be observed a day later on Monday (May 25).

People have been requested to report to the committee through contacting the numbers: 9559493, 955947 and 9558337 (telephone); 9563397 and 9558337 (fax) if they see the Shawwal moon anywhere in Bangladesh sky.

Bangladesh has been under lockdown since March 26 amid a surge in coronavirus cases and deaths across the country. Authorities earlier put restrictions on congregational prayers at mosques to limit the risks of virus transmission. The restriction was later relaxed on condition of maintaining safety guidelines.

However, the government urged the devotees not to offer Eid-ul-Fitr prayers in congregations at Eidgahs or on open grounds but at mosques to reduce transmission risks of coronavirus.
