Journalists should report more analytical and investigative news on climate change, which can help Bangladesh to mitigate such issues, speakers have said at a workshop.

The event was jointly organised by the Bangladesh Climate Change Journalist Forum (BCJF) and National Institute of Mass Communication (NIMCO) in Dhaka on Monday.

Former secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Satyabrata Saha was the event’s chief guest, while Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Tanmaya Das was a special guest. Senior journalists from various media outlets were present as discussants at the workshop, presided over by NIMCO Director General Sufi Zakir Hossain.

Satyabrata remarked, “The entire society including politicians and economists, must take effective steps to reduce global carbon emissions because we do not have enough time in our hands. The global carbon emission target by 2050 is net zero.”

The former secretary pointed out that BCJF can play a good role in the more investigative and analytical reporting on climate change.

Tanmoy stated, “There is a link between infrastructure development and climate change. Countries that are now developing are doing development work by hampering the climate. So, they have a responsibility to help the climate-vulnerable countries.

He then requested the 40 participating journalists to study the Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100.

BCJF’s General Secretary Motaher Hossain and President Kawaser Rahman were also present at the workshop.
