More than half of JU graduates can’t participate in convocation

More than half the graduates entitled to participate in the sixth convocation of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on February 25 are set to miss out on the occasion due to a malfunction in the online registration process.

Speaking to several graduates who wish to participate in the convocation, UNB learned that technical errors in the registration website, slowness of the registration software, server shutdown during registration, non-uploading of data, complexity of functions, difficulties in hall clearance and procedural errors prevented them from completing their registration on time.

Apart from this, many people said they did not register after paying extra money for the registration of the convocation, even though they had previously obtained the original certificate. Some of the graduates complained that very little time was given for registration. As a result, they failed to register by collecting the necessary documents.

According to the information of the examination controller office of the university, a total of 31,716 graduates, including 12,468 graduates (honours), 10,371 postgraduates, 8,075 people of weekend programme and 802 people of MPhil-PhD candidates were supposed to participate in the convocation.

Meanwhile, Syed Mohammad Ali Reza, member secretary of the registration committee, said a total of 15,219 graduates have registered for the convocation.

Among them, there are 11,444 people who completed regular graduation and post-graduation, 3,461 people of weekend programme and 34 MPhil degree and 280 doctorates.

Accordingly, about 16,497 graduate students could not register to participate in the convocation. Several members of the convocation management committee said none of them will be able to participate in the convocation.

It is known that the convocation of Jahangirnagar University has been held only five times in 52 years.

The fifth convocation was held last in 2015 during the time of Vice-Chancellor Professor Farzana Islam. As many as 9,000 graduates, MPhil and PhD degree holders participated in the service.
