From now on, members of parliament (MPs) will be able to import electric and hybrid vehicles under duty-free facilities.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Wednesday issued a statutory regulatory order (SRO) in this regard signed by its Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Muneem.

The SRO said lawmakers can import electric vehicles, among others, duty-free.

Parliamentarians will be able to import a 1,650cc petrol- or gasoline-run motor vehicle, or up to a 1,800cc diesel-run motor vehicle, or up to a 2,000cc microbus or hybrid motor car or hybrid microbus, or up to a 3,000cc petrol- or gasoline-run jeep, or a 4,500cc diesel-run hybrid jeep, or other vehicles with only electric motor for propulsion duty-free.

A lawmaker can import a vehicle during his tenure without paying customs duty, sales tax, development surcharge, and import permit fee.

Lawmakers enjoy the facility as per the Customs Act 1969 and Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty Act 2012.
