Muted Eid celebrations amid lockdown

The Eid-ul-Fitr this year came at a time when the world is struggling to fight the deadly coronavirus. People from many parts of Bangladesh are battling the pandemic.

Ashfaqul Alam, a 22-year old Dhaka University student who used to spend time with friends during Eid day, got stuck to his house for the entire Eid day.

"I missed the long running practice of waking up early in the morning and rushing to Eidgah with my family members. This is heartbreaking. There is no joy this Eid as people are passing every single day with in serious uncertainty," he said.

The festive buzz was missing as most popular public places remained deserted, whether it was in Dhaka or elsewhere in the country as people mostly remained indoors.

Iqbal Ahmed a Dhanmondi resident, said that every year he visits his village home in Chattogram to celebrate Eid with his family, but this time he refrained from going there.

“It’s not just about me. I don’t want to put my family at risk. I would talk to my family members via video call and wish them Eid Mubarak," said Iqbal Ahmed.

"This Eid is a completely different one. We used to go to houses of our relatives but this year that has not happened," he said.

Mehidi Hasan, assistant director of Department of Narcotics Control said: "I celebrate Eid with my relatives at my village home in Barisal but this time I was unable to go there as the government ordered us to stay at our workstations."

“It is a really hard to stay away from ones family on Eid day but all of us must also stay home and maintain social distancing," he opined.
