A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed Abul Bashar Mollah, the master of 'MV Moyur-2' launch, on a three-day remand in connection with a case filed over the tragic capsize of the launch 'MV Morning Bird' on Buriganga that killed 34 people.
Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate AFM Maruf Chowdhury passed the order after a hearing on the case.
Earlier in the day, Md Shahidul Alam, sub-inspector of naval police and investigation officer of the case, produced the accused at the court seeking a ten-day remand.
The lawyer of the accused submitted a petition, seeking bail along with the cancellation of the remand prayer.
After hearing both parties, the magistrate rejected the bail petition of the accused and placed him on remand.
Earlier, on July 13, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Abul Bashar Mollah from South Keraniganj area.
On June 29, the Dhaka-bound 'MV Morning Bird' launch carrying around 150 passengers from Munshiganj sank in the river after being hit by 'Moyur-2' near Shyambazar in the capital’s old town.
Bodies of 34 people were recovered.
Mohammad Shamsul, sub-inspector of Sadarghat River Police Station, filed a case at South Keraniganj Police Station the following day.
Police arrested a staff member of the launch Abdus Salam and the owner of Mayur-2 launch Mosaddeq Hanif Soad on July 7 and July 9 respectively.
