N’ganj mosque blast: CID nabs 8 Titas staffers

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Police on Saturday arrested eight officials and staffers in connection with the blast in a Narayanganj mosque which has claimed 32 lives so far.

CID’s Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mainul Hasan, deputy Dhaka Range, confirmed the matter during a press briefing on Saturday.

The name of the arrestees are: Titas managing engineer Md Sirajul Islam, deputy manager Mahbudur Rahman Rabbi, assistant engineer SM Hasan Shahriar, assistant engineer Manik Miah, senior supervisor Md Munibur Rahman Chowdhury, senior developer Md Ayub Ali, assistant Hanif Miah and staff member Ismail Pradhan.

Earlier on September 7, the authority of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited suspended its eight officials and staffers in connection with the blast in the Narayanganj mosque which has claimed 32 lives so far.

In two separate letters, the Titasauthorities suspended them for negligence. Besides, the Titasauthorities also issued showcause notices against them.

On September 4, around 40 people were injured in the blast at a mosque in Fatullah after Eshaprayers. Of them, 37 were taken to the Dhaka hospital in critical condition and 32 of them died.

Locals said the explosion took place around 8:45 pm at BaitusSalat Mosque of Fatullah when the devotees had just finished their prayers.

One of the air conditioners of the mosque went off and sparked a fire inside the mosque. Later, all the six ACs exploded there, creating panic among the devotees.

Upon initial investigation, fire service authorities believed the incident might have occurred due to gas leakage.
