Five people have died after a microbus collided head-on with a battery-powered auto-rickshaw on Kanchpur Bridge in Narayanganj.

The accident, which took place in Shimrail area on the west side of the bridge around 9:00 am on Monday, left several others injured.

The deceased are auto-rickshaw driver Abu Hanif, 25, Mamun, 25, Jamal Mia, 42, and two unidentified persons.

Pedestrian Omar Farooq said the collision happened as the auto-rickshaw was travelling on the wrong side. Being rushed to hospitals, one of the passengers died at Al-Baraka Hospital in Madanpur while the other four were declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Confirming the matter, DMCH Police Outpost In-charge Inspector Bachchu Mia said the bodies have been kept at the hospital’s morgue.

The microbus and the autorickshaw were seized, however, the microbus driver managed to flee, said Kanchpur Highway Police Station (OC) Md Nabir Hossain.
