Awami League presidium member and former health minister Mohammad Nasim has been kept in a deep coma at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital here as he continues battling for life after suffering a brain haemorrhage and with Covid-19 infection.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Vice Chancellor Prof Kanak Kanti Barua confirmed the matter to media Saturday (June 6). “He is in critical condition. We have reviewed his physical condition at 5 in the evening. He has been kept in a deep coma, with no senses,” said Prof Kanak Kanti Barua.
A 13-member medical team has been formed for Nasim's treatment. The BSMMU VC is among the members. Doctors will take next course of action after 72 hours, he added.
On June 1, Mohammad Nasim tested positive for coronavirus after being admitted to the private hospital in the capital's Shyamoli area, with blood pressure problems and physical weakness. His health condition deteriorated after he suffered a brain stroke and had to undergo an emergency surgery on June 5.
A stalwart of the ruling party, in Nasim's present role he has been acting as the convenor for the 14-party ruling alliance built around the heft of AL. After the 2014 parliamentary election, Mohammad Nasim became the health minister of the Awami League government. Earlier, he served in several ministries during the 1996-2001 Awami League government.
