National-level logistics policy workshop begins Wednesday

A two-day long mega workshop on formulating national logistics industry development policy for Bangladesh and experience from global good practices is going to be held on November 16 to assist the policy formulation process with data-driven and fact-based findings.

The World Bank Group, industries ministry, and Business Initiative Leading Development (BUILD) will jointly organise the event at a hotel in the capital.

National and international industry specialists, stakeholders, public sector representatives, and development partners are expected to attend the workshop featuring several sessions. 

The first session titled “Inaugural Session: Importance of Logistics – Philosophy” will take place on Wednesday. BUILD Chairperson Nihad Kabir will present the opening address as session chair, while Industries minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun is expected to address the session as the chief guest.

Practice Manager on Transport of World Bank South Asia Dr Shomik Raj Mehndiratta, Private Industry and Investment Advisor to Prime Minister Salman F Rahman, President of The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Jashim Uddin, Secretary of Industries ministry Zakia Sultana, Senior Secretary of Prime Minister’s Office Md Tofazzel Hossain Miah, and State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Mojumder will attend the session as special guests.

In the second session titled “Balancing Logistics Development for Accelerated Growth through Export Diversification,” Secretary of the Economic Relations Division at Finance Ministry Sharifa Khan will present the keynote there. Manager of Creating Markets Advisory Services (CMA) in South Asia at IFC Selma Rasavac, Chairman of Policy Exchange of Bangladesh Dr M Masrur Reaz, and President of FICCI Naser Ezaz Bijoy will speak there as well.

In the third session titled “Formulating Logistics Policy and Assessing Logistics Cost- Learnings from Global Experience,” WBG Global Lead for Logistics Dr Charles Kunaka will present the keynote virtually in the first segment on formulating and implementing logistics policy & improving logistics performance.

Assistant Vice President of PSA International Pte Ltd Wei Chiang Lim, DCCI President Rizwan Rahman, and Additional Secretary (Policy, Law and International Co-operation), Industries ministry Sheikh Faezul Amin will express their opinion there.

On Thursday, the first session titled, “Balancing Multimodal Transport System for Logistics Competitiveness” will be moderated by the Secretary of Shipping ministry Md Mostafa Kamal.

In the closing session titled, “Designing future pathway to formulate comprehensive national logistics industry development policy of Bangladesh,” Railways Minister Md. Nurul Islam Sujan will speak as chief guest while BUILD CEO Ferdaus Ara Begum will deliver the vote of Thanks.

A draft policy framework on the “National Logistics Industry Development Policy Framework” has already been presented at PMO on 31 August 2022.

The 1st meeting of the Logistics Infrastructure Development Working Committee (LIDWC), co-chaired by Secretary of Prime Minister’s Office Md Tofazzel Hossain Miah, and former BUILD Chairperson Abul Kasem Khan was held on 23rd December, 2020 at PMO.
