Navy, BGB provide aid to St Martin’s residents

The Bangladesh Navy and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) provided humanitarian assistance to St Martin’s Island residents on Tuesday, to help them tackle the aftermath of very severe cyclone Mocha – which wreaked havoc on the island Sunday.

The navy provided 600 poor and needy families with necessary treatment, medicine and food assistance, read an Inter Services Public Relation Directorate (ISPR) press release. The food aid included rice, pulses, flour, gram, salt, potable water, and water purification tablets.

Bangladesh Navy is engaged in emergency medical assistance to areas affected by the cyclone with special medical teams, lifesaving medicines, saline and other supplies free of charge. The navy will continue this programme until the situation improves in the affected areas.

On the same day, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General (DG) Maj Gen AKM Nazmul Hasan distributed relief items to 800 cyclone-affected people in St Martin’s Island.

Alongside the relief distribution, the BGB chief also visited St Martin’s BOP (border outpost) under Teknaf BGB Battalion 2, read a press release.

Nazmul Hasan interacted with the BGB members on duty at the BOP, and expressed sincere thanks for performing their duties properly in dealing with the disaster, it read.

Senior officials of the BGB headquarters, commander of Cox's Bazar region, captain of Teknaf battalion and other officials of BGB and journalists were present there.

Since hoisting the Great Danger Signal 10 in Cox's Bazar district and adjacent coastal areas due to the cyclonic storm, the BGB personnel had been making aware the residents in the coastal areas by using loudhailers and going door to door.

They also played a key role in evacuating the people of coastal areas to cyclone shelters.
