Bangladesh has detected ‘Lambda variant’ a new Covid-19 strain, first found in Peru in August last year.

According to a joint genome sequencing by the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) and Jahangirnagar University, the variant was found from a sample of a 49-year-old woman in Dhaka that was collected in March.

Germany’s Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID) published the report.

Meantime, the Lambda Covid-19 variant has now spread to as many as 29 countries, most notably in South America.

The World Health Organization (WHO) named the Lambda Covid-19 variant as a global 'variant of interest' due to its elevated presence in South America.

According to the WHO, lambda variant accounts for around 81 per cent of the cases reported since April in South America.
