Law Minister Anisul Huq has said any complaints filed under the Digital Security Act were now being scrutinised by the law enforcement cell before being sent to court.

"Only complaints found to be significant enough will be sent to court. The law was not enacted to curtail the freedom of the press," he said on Wednesday.

The minister made the statement at the annual general meeting of the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB) 2021 in Dhaka, which was presided over by CRAB President Mizan Malik and conducted by its General Secretary Alauddin Arif.

“Digital Security Act is important in Bangladesh, but it is also true that the law is being misused,” the law minister said, mentioning that steps to eliminate the misuse of this law are being discussed.

He also praised journalists saying that sometimes crime reports are being made even before the law enforcement agencies get wind of the incident.

The relationship between journalists and law enforcement agencies remains strong, the minister added.
