NID not mandatory for rail travel

Rail passengers will not need to display their National Identity (NID) cards while travelling. Bangladesh Railway (BR) has also announced up to four intercity train tickets can be purchased with a single NID card.

A press release issued by Bangladesh Railway said this on Thursday.

According to the press release, passengers will not need to have NID cards on them during their journey by train from now on and a family of up to four members can purchase tickets by showing only one NID card.

Earlier on August 13, BR requested intercity train passengers in a public notice to travel by buying their own tickets through online platforms or mobile apps and refrain from travelling with tickets borrowed or bought from others.

The government decided to make train tickets non-transferable to prevent the sale of tickets on the black market, said in the notice.

Later, on August 16, while visiting Kamalapur railway station in the capital, Railway Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan said buying four tickets with only one NID card would not be allowed.
