Nine cops to get coronavirus compensation in a week

Families of nine policemen and policewomen, who died of the novel coronavirus, are going to receive compensation ranging from 37.50 lakh taka to 50 lakh taka within a week.

Through this, the government for the first time is going to compensate bereaved families of the frontline policemen hailed from Dhaka, Chattogram, Rajshahi and Sirajganj districts.

On Sunday, the Finance Division sent letters to the Chief Accounting Officer to sanction a total of 37.50 taka to 50 lakh taka in favour of the bereaved families according to the government employment grade. The Finance Division issued separate letters to the Ministry of Home on Tuesday.

An official of the Finance Division said the ministry has selected nine policemen and women as their families submitted the full documents to receive the government declared compensation. A total of 3.75 crore taka will be spent for compensating nine policemen and women from the compensation fund, the official also said. The letter mentioned that the expenditure would be met from 500 crore taka allocated in the 2020-21 budget for the "Special Grants for Health Risk Compensation."

Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs submitted a proposal to compensate 17 policemen and women two weeks ago. Nine policemen and women are --Sub Inspector of SB, Dhaka Md Rasal Biwas, Inspector of Dhaka Metro-North Anita Rani Das, Sub Inspector of Rajshahi Mosharraf Hosanna Sheikh, Inspector of DMP Raju Ahmed, Constable Mukhlesur Rahman of Chattogram district, Constable of DMP Alam Hossain, Naik of DMP Md Mamnur Rashid, Inspector of Sirajganj district Fazlul Rahman and ASI of Rajshahi Abul Kalam Azad.

Last month, the families of the Deputy Police Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police Mizanur Rahman, Defence Secretary Abdullah Al Mohsin Chowdhury and Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College's Assistant Professor Md Moyeen Uddin, who died of the novel coronavirus received compensation of 50 lakh each.

Moyeen Uddin was the first doctor to have succumbed to coronavirus. He passed away on April 15. Abdullah Al Mohsin Chowdhury died on June 29. After the coronavirus cases were first reported in the country on March 8, the government announced compensation for its frontline employees, ranging from 5 lakh taka to 10 lakh taka for those who will contract the virus and 25 lakh taka to 50 lakh taka in case of death from the virus.
