Death-row convicts’ escape: Another accomplice surrenders

One more Ansar al-Islam member named Edi Amin, who reportedly aided the escape of two death-row convict militants, surrendered before a Dhaka court and sought bail on Sunday.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain rejected his bail prayer and allowed the police to interrogate him for four days in remand, said Md Jashim Uddin, deputy commissioner of the Prosecution Division at Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Edi Amin, who was on bail, came to the court for appearing in a case in which the two death-convicted militants were also accused. Police said he aided the escape of the death-row convicts and also showed him an accused in the case they filed after the escape of the prisoners on November 20.

The escapees are Md Abu Siddique Sohel alias Sakib alias Sajid alias Shahab, 33, of Lalmonirhat and Moinul Hasan Shamim alias Sifat alias Samir alias Imran, 24, of Sunamganj. They were convicted in Jagriti Prokashoni publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan murder case.

Following the escape, the government issued a red alert at all the entry and exit points of Bangladesh to aid in the arrest of the escapees but none of the two is yet to be arrested.

The police also announced a Tk 20 lakh bounty for any information leading to the arrest of the escapees.

Police on Wednesday arrested another Ansar al-Islam member Mehedi Hasan Omi alias Rafi at Jatrabari in Dhaka. Later, police said Mehedi, who also was on bail, had masterminded and coordinated the escape and gave the escapees money to flee.
