The largest Eid congregation (Jamaat) of the country in Kishoreganj's historic Sholakia ground will not take place this Eid-ul-Fitr to contain the spread of Covid-19.
The Kishoreganj district office took the decision after a meeting, said Mohammad Shamim Alam, deputy commissioner (DC) of Kishoreganj.
The decision is also in line with the government notice to not hold any Eid congregation on open grounds this year.
Devotees are requested to perform Eid prayers at mosques in their respective areas following health guidelines, he said.
Eid congregation also did not take place last year due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
In 1828, it is said, one lakh twenty five thousand (shoa lakh) devotees prayed together in the Eid congregation at Sholakia ground. Thus, the ground later came to be known as “Sholakia”.
