No militant involvement was found in the explosion at Pallabi Police Station, said Abdul Baten, joint commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), adding that it was a criminal activity focused on the spread of local domination.

He disclosed the information while briefing the press at the DMP media centre on Thursday.

"Two cases have been filed in this regard with Pallabi police station. Those who were arrested are being questioned. What we have found through interrogations and investigations is that the incident is a criminal act related to the spread of 'local domination'," said Abdul Baten.

"We have not yet found any involvement of militants in it. We are searching for who, why and how the criminals planned to kill. If we find more, we will let you know later," he added.

Earlier on July 29, five people including four policemen were injured as a bomb-like device exploded inside Pallabi police station in the early hours of Wednesday.

The injured are— Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC, Investigation) Imran, 48, Sub-Inspector (SI) Sajeeb, 30, SI Ankush, 28, SI Rumi, 28 and Riaz, 28.

Later on Wednesday, US-based watchdog SITE Intelligence Group Director Rita Katz tweeted that Middle East-based terrorist organisation Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the explosion.

However, the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) of DMP denied the claim deeming it to be fake.
