The High Court has said that there is no legal objection to establishing Sonargaon Economic Zone with the permission of appropriate authorities, including the Department od Environment.
A HC bench comprising Justices Md Ashraful Kamal and Razik Al Jalil issued the verdict on Wednesday after final hearing on a writ filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA).
The brief verdict said, there is no legal objection to Sonargaon Economic Zone. However, before establishing the economic zone, new application has to be made to the Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority after obtaining a certificate from the Department of Environment and the National River Conservation Commission.
Additionally, the verdict also called for the formation of a committee comprising representatives of the local administration and the environment department. The committee will look into whether agricultural lands or government lands have been croached. The committee will also check and report on compensation issues.
