There is no possibility of train fares going up before Eid, or in the near future, said Railway Minister Md Zillul Hakim on Sunday.
He made this remark refuting a number of recent media reports claiming that train fares are increasing before the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr from April 1.
The railway minister added, “Who is he [Acting Director General of Bangladesh Railway Sardar Shahadat Ali] to voice such a decision? I confirm that the fares will not rise.
“If the fares ever need to be increased, at first I will discuss the matter with you [Journalists], explain the situation to people, then consider hiking fares. There is no room for confusion.”
Recently, a number of media – quoting Acting Bangladesh Railway Director General Sardar Shahadat Ali – reported that the train fares will be adjusted after withdrawing concessional facilities.
Train fares remained the same for a long time, but the railway expenditures increased due to price hikes of fuel and other machinery. To boost revenue, a decision has been made to remove existing incentives.
