The High Court has granted bail to Moazzem Hossain Sohag, a union member and also an accused in a case filed over gang-rape and torture of a woman in Noakhali's Begumganj upazila.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order on Sunday.
Advocate Md Ozi Ullah who stood in favour of the accused confirmed the matter to The Business Post.
Deputy Attorney General Md Sarwar Hossain was present in favour of the state before the court today.
Earlier on December 15, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted a charge sheet before the court against 14 persons in the case.
The names of the accused in the case are - Delwar Hossain, Jamal Uddin, Noor Hossain Badal, Abdur Rahim, Mohammad Ali, Shamsuddin Sumon, Israfil Hossain Miah, Mainuddin Saju, Noor Hossain Russel, Anwar Hossain Sohag, Abdur Rob Chowdhury, Mostafizur Rahman, Mizanur Rahman and Moazzem Hossain Sohag.
Earlier on October 20, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) informed the HC that it had removed the torture video of the housewife from social media.
As per the investigation report, members of ‘Delwar Bahini', a local group of miscreants, regularly used to rape the housewife. Besides, both local administration and law enforcing agencies had shown negligence in this matter.
According to the investigation report, the victim's husband was also involved with this incident.
Recommending action against all the accused, the report commented, "If proper justice can ensure then this type of incident can be reduced."
The High Court bench of Justice Mujibur Rahman Miah and Justice Mohiuddin Shamim fixed November 29 for the next hearing in this matter.
Earlier on October 5, the High Court ordered BTRC to remove the video from social media.
The court asked the BTRC to keep a copy of the video clip as evidence and ordered it to submit the clip to the High Court through the Deputy Attorney General.
A housewife in Noakhali's Begumganj upazila was allegedly molested by some local miscreants in Ward No. 9 of Eklashpur Union of the upazila last month and a disturbing video of the barbaric incident went viral on the internet.
The accused stripped the housewife naked and beat her despite her crying for mercy after tying up her husband at her father’s house in the upazila.
The incident sparked widespread outrage on social media.
A video of the incident came to the notice of District Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Alamgir Hossain and he directed the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Begumganj Model Police Station Harun Aur Rashid Chowdhury to take action in this regard.
