A court has sentenced two main accused Delwar Hossain Delu and Abul Kalam to life imprisonment in a case of rape of a housewife in Noakhali's Begumganj upazila.

Also, both were fined Tk 50,000 and sentenced to three more months in jail for non-payment.

Judge Joynal Abedin of the District Women and Child Abuse Suppression Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict in the presence of the accused at 11:10am on Monday. Through this, the case was completed in 13 working days.

Public Prosecutor Advocate Mamunur Rashid Lablu said that they have been able to present witnesses, cross-examine and testify properly in the rape case.

In this case, 12 witnesses testified for the state and three for the accused. The state is satisfied with this verdict, he added. 

The court framed charges against the accused on February 17 this year. Later on August 18, the testimony of the plaintiff was taken in the presence of the accused.

According to the case statement, Delwar alias Delu and his associates Kalam swooped on the victim’s house in Begumganj upazila around 11:00am on Oct 5, 2019.

Later, he raped the victim after threatening her with gang rape.

Delwar raped the victim again on April 7, 2020.

Besides, two more cases have been filed against Delwar.

The victim was molested by some local miscreants at Ward No 9 of Eklashpur Union but the incident came to light after a video of it went viral on the internet.

The miscreants tortured the housewife after undressing her and captured it on phone. The video sent a shock wave throughout the country, triggering protests everywhere.

The victim filed two cases accusing nine people, 33 days after the incident.

One of the cases was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and another under the Pornography Control Act.
