After a long hiatus of about a year and a half, the National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19 suggested reopening the country's educational institutions as the infection rate is declining.

After a meeting of the committee on Thursday night, National Technical Advisory Committee (NTAC) Chairman Mohammad Shahidullah said, “As vaccination is gradually being confirmed to more and more people, the educational institutions can now be reopened considering the overall situation and taking some precautionary measures regarding public health.”

The committee will convey their decision to the Education Ministry formally soon.

An inter-ministerial meeting has been called next Sunday to take a final decision on reopening schools and colleges. The meeting will also decide about the steps after the reopening of the educational institutions.

Earlier, on Thursday Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the parliament that measures are being taken to reopen the schools and colleges soon.

The government shut the educational institutions on March 17, 2020, after the country reported its first Covid-19 cases on March 8.

Then the closure was extended several times, most recently until September 11.
