One dies in Tejgaon explosion

A man, who sustained burn injuries in an explosion at a house in Dhaka’s Tejgaon area, died at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the early hours of Saturday.

The deceased, identified as Jitu, received 65 per cent burns in his body and died while undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit, confirmed SM Ayub Hossain, resident surgeon of the institute.

Another injured, Yasin Talukder, sustained 50 per cent burns and is also undergoing treatment at the ICU of the institute.

Both of them suffered burns in their respiratory organs, the physician added.

On Friday night, the duo was injured in the explosion at a mess located on the second floor of a six-storey building at Purbo Tejturi Bazar, said Dewan Azad, duty officer at the control room of Fire Service and Civil Defence.

The reason behind the explosion could not be known immediately, Azad added.

Police said the explosion took place in the room where the duo was staying.

Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police visited the spot.

Deputy Commissioner Abdul Mannan of CTTC said they did not find any explosive materials in the incident.
