The domestic market of onions will stabilise within the next week, as Muri Kata onions are starting to arrive in the market, said Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) Director General AHM Shafiquzzaman.

He made the remark on Monday at a reception for the champion and runners up of a debate competition on consumer rights awareness. The event, presided over by Debate for Democracy Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiran, was held in the city’s DNCRP conference room.

Cumilla Victoria Govt College team is the champion, while Eden Mohila College team is the runners up.

At the programme, Shafiquzzaman further said, “Onion hoarders will be brought to book under the fullest extent of the law. A number of onion hoarders responsible for the price hike of onions have already been identified, and the process is on to identify the rest of the culprits.

“We are looking into where the mountains of onions previously stockpiled in Khatungonj and Shyambazar have disappeared following our raid. With the help of intelligence agencies, we are trying to track down onion hoarders, and bring them to justice.”

He then said, “So far raids have been conducted in 54 districts, and Tk 11 lakh have been fined. A few days ago, six lakh eggs were found stockpiled in a cold storage.

“The government is working to stabilise the onion market, after successfully tackling the meat and potato market instability.”

Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University Prof Dr Tazul Islam Chowdhury, DNCRP directors Muhammad Asaduzzaman and Fakir Muhammad Monowar Hossain, and Deputy Director Atia Sultana.

The champion and runners up teams received trophies, certificates and Tk 2 lakh and 1 lakh in cash prizes respectively.
