All the rivers have started to swell, triggered by the onrush of water from the upstream and rain, inundating low-lying areas in different upazilas of Kurigram.

Some 10,000 people in the char areas have been affected as the river water entered their houses and submerged the roads.

The Dudhkumar River at Pateshwari Sonahat Rail Bridge point was flowing almost at the danger level in Bhurungamari upazila while the water level of the Dharla, Brahmaputra and Teesta rivers has also increased.

People were seen moving on boats while vegetable farms, Aman rice seed beds and jute fields were inundated.

Abed Ali, union parishad member of Bamandanga, said the water of Dudhkumar started to enter the locality from Tuesday.

Though the authorities concerned have dumped geo bags, the 250-metre flood protection embankment collapsed due to the strong current.

Marjina Begum, a resident of Uttar Nauabash village in Sadar upazila, said she, along with her family, took shelter at the flood protection embankment on Wednesday as the flood water entered her house.

Biplab, a vegetable trader, said, “I cultivated pointed gourd on one bigha of land and I was happy with the good yield. But the flood water damaged my vegetables.”

The executive magistrate of Kurigram Water Development Board said although there is a possibility that the river water may cross the danger level on June 23, there is no possibility of a long-term flood.

Kurigram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saidul Arif said all-out preparation has been taken to tackle the flood situation and 541 tonnes of rice, Tk 10.21 lakh and dry foods are in stock for distribution in time to the flood-affected areas.

Flash flood inundates haor areas in Kishoreganj

The flash flood inundated different areas after a rise in water level in various rivers of Kishoreganj Haor area due to an onrush of water from upstream and continuous monsoon rains, reports UNB.

Parts of various roads and ferry terminals have already been submerged, forcing  the Roads and Highways Department to suspend the ferry services on Wednesday adding to passengers’ suffering.

Several lakh people of Austagram, Mithamoin and Itna upazilas use roads for six months in a year for going to the district town.

Due to the ferry suspension, passengers had to use boat and auto-rickshaw from Balikala to Mithamoin and from Leather Ghat to Itna to reach their destinations, said locals.

According to Water Development Board in Kishoreganj, the water level in different rivers in the Haor area has increased significantly in the last 24 hours, but the water level of the rivers has not crossed the danger level yet.

Bayezid Mia of Khairpur-Abdullahpur union of Austagram said, "During the dry season, we can go quickly to the district town. On Wednesday, I came to Mithamoin and found that the ferry was closed; I was forced to go to Kishoreganj town following a different route.”

Momin Ullah, an auto-rickshaw driver of Mithamoin Sadar Union, said, "We will be more affected as the road is submerged. Now there will be fewer people on this route, will earn less, and we will be unemployed.”

Executive Engineer of Kishoreganj RHD Ritesh Barua said, all the ferry terminals in Haor areas have been submerged by flood water and many roads in Haor have also been submerged. “There is no arrangement to start the ferry in this situation. Therefore, all ferries have been closed.”
