More than 200 shops were burned as a massive fire tore through a textile market in Gazipur city on Sunday night, traders said.

The blaze caused damage worth Tk several crore, they claimed.

No casualties were reported in the incident.

The fire erupted at the east side of Haji Abdur Rahim Wholesale Textile Market around 9:30pm and spread around quickly, said Abdul Aziz, a shop manager at the market.

Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Md Abdullah Al Arefin said six firefighting units rushed to the spot and tamed the flames around 12:15am on Monday.

The firefighters had to struggle to bring the fire under control due to the narrow passage of the market, he said.

The cause of the fire and the exact extent of damage will be confirmed after investigation, he added.

The market’s traders’ association president, Haji Abdul Matin, said some 500-600 traders used to run businesses in the market.

Traders claimed their goods and cash were looted in the name of rescue during the chaotic situation.
