A suspension of vessel movement across the country has caused a tailback of over seven hundred vehicles at Shimulia ferry terminal in Munshiganj.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) on Wednesday suspended all types of vessel movement across the country until further notice due to severe storm caused by the cyclonic storm Yaas.

Zakir Hossain, police inspector of Shimulia jetty traffic said, the wind was still strong in the Padma river, causing big waves and strong currents.

Over 740 vehicles were waiting to cross, most of which were freight trucks and covered vans, he said.

Shafiqul Islam, assistant general manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Shimulia jetty, said ferry services at the Shimulia-Banglabazar waterway could remain closed indefinitely until the weather conditions improve.

In this situation, vehicles and passengers using this waterway had been advised to use alternative routes, he added.
