Another ferry hit Padma Bridge's 10th pillar again around 7:00am on Friday.

The ferry named 'Kakoli' hit the pillar on its way to Shimulia Ghat from Banglabazar Ghat, said Zakir Hossain, in charge of Mawa Traffic Police.

The ferry hit the pillar due to strong currents, he added.

The ferry hit pillar shedding a portion of concrete of the pile cap, executive engineer (main bridge) Dewan Abdul Kader told UNB.

Though the vessel was partially damaged, there had been no structural damage to the bridge, he added.

Earlier, 10-12 passengers were hurt and two vehicles damaged when a ferry named 'Birshreshtho Jahangir' hit the same pillar on August 9.

Earlier on 23 July, a passenger ferry named Shahjalal hit the 17th pillar of the bridge after the driver lost control over the steering.

The collisions resulted in a government decision on August 10 of banning movement of ferries with heavy vehicles under the Padma Bridge until the strong current of the river is brought under control.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said only light vehicles and ambulances carrying ferries could cross the river on the Shimulia-Banglabazar route until further notice.
