Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said that the much-awaited Padma Multipurpose Bridge will be opened for vehicular movement in next June.

“Ninety-six per cent of the bridge’s main works have already been completed, and the overall progress of the project is around 90.50 per cent,” Quader, also general secretary of the ruling Awami League, told journalists after a view-exchange meeting with different bridges division officials in Dhaka on Tuesday morning.

Bridges Division Secretary Manjur Hossen was also present at the meeting.

The minister said 80 per cent construction work of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman tunnel beneath the river Karnaphuli in Chattogram has also been completed.

“We are working to complete the project by December this year,” he added.

Regarding the three-phases of the Dhaka Elevated Expressway, Quader said about 78.50 per cent works of the first phase of the expressway has already been completed.

Working progress of Banani-Moghbazar part of the express way is 31 per cent, he added.

The Minister instructed the officials concerned to further speed up the projects.

Replying to the verdict of Maj (retd) Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan murder case trial, Quader said the verdict of the trial proved that the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina believes in rule of law.

Later, Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Vikram Kumar Doraiswami made a courtesy call with the minister at his secretariat office in Dhaka.
