Pallabi blast: 3 accused on 14-day remand

A Dhaka court has placed three accused in 14-day remand each in two cases filed over the explosion inside the Pallabi police station in the capital.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mainul Islam passed the order on Thursday.

The three arrestees are - Shahidul Islam, Rafikul Islam, Mosharraf Hossain.

Earlier in the day, police produced the accused before the court.

The investigation officer prayed with 7-day remand in an arms case and 10-day remand in an explosives acts case while defence lawyers submitted a petition seeking bail and cancellation of the remand plea.

After hearing both parties, the magistrate gave 14-day remand in two cases.

On Wednesday (July 29), five people including four policemen were injured as a bomb-like device exploded inside Pallabi police station in the early hours of Wednesday.

The explosion took place around 7 am when a weight-machine like object went off at the police station, leaving the policemen injured.

Abdul Baten, joint commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) earlier on Thursday said two cases had been filed in this regard with Pallabi police station and those who were arrested were being questioned.

"What we have found through interrogations and investigations is that the incident is a criminal act related to the spread of 'local domination'," said Abdul Baten while briefing the press at the DMP media centre on Thursday afternoon.

"We have not yet found any involvement of militants in it. We are searching for who, why and how the criminals planned to kill. If we find more, we will let you know later," he added, dismissing a tweet on Wednesday by US-based watchdog SITE Intelligence Group Director Rita Katz stating Middle East-based terrorist organisation Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the explosion.
