There was no involvement of any militant group in the Wednesday early morning explosion at Mirpur's Pallabi Police Station that left five people injured, said Krishna Pada Roy, additional commissioner (crime) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The explosion occurred when police brought three suspected criminals to the police station after detaining them, he said.
Krishna Pada Roy said police conducted a raid in Mirpur's Kalshi area in the city around 2 am after being tipped off that a group of criminals was planning to carry out subversive activities. Rafiqul Islam, Shahidul and Mosharraf were arrested from there and brought to Pallabi Police Station.
The additional commissioner confirmed the arrestees are not members of any militant group. "They are members of a criminal group. Explosive substances have been found from a weight machine they were carrying," he said while visiting the police station in the morning.
The device similar to a weight machine, two firearms and bullets were recovered from the spot where they were detained, said Krishna Pada Roy.
He denied while asked during a briefing whether the explosion was a part of an attack carried out by militants.
The Bomb disposal unit of DMP defused two explosive devices following the incident, he added.
Five people, including four policemen, were injured in the explosion inside the Pallabi Police Station early in the morning.
The injured are -- Inspector (operation) Imran, Sub-Inspector Sajeeb Khan, two probationary sub-inspectors (PSI) Rumi and Ankush and Riaz.
